The mill levy is a type of property tax that is applied to a property based on its assessed value, meaning that the rate of the tax is calculated based on the value of the property. This rate is called mills, which is one dollar per $1,000 dollars of the property’s assessed value. The purpose of the mill levy is to generate revenue that is used to fund public services and amenities within a particular area, including things like public schools, parks and recreation areas, and other essential services.
To calculate the mill levy, the amount of funding needed for these services is first determined, and then this amount is divided by the total value of all property within the area. Finally, the rate from each jurisdiction is added together to obtain the total mill levy for the entire area.
